Festspillene i Bergen deltok i 2002-2004 i et prosjekt som utforsket de grunnleggende elementene i vestlig teeaterkultur, blant annet for å skape et samtidig uttrykk for tragedien.

Prosjekt: Tragedia Edogonidia
A co-production involving 9 co-organisers and actions including the production of at least 40 performances in at least 5 European countries, an exhibition of plastic artworks and the production and dissemination of audiovisual and paper documentation. During the phases of preparation and staging the central topic will be an investigation of the essential elements in western theatrical culture in order to outline a new form of contemporary representation. The production is characterised by a language mainly aimed at addressing perception. The language shall be a mix of marginal languages; expressive forms related to the visual arts and advanced technology.
The aim is to search for a new contemporary form of the tragedy, to develop an awareness of the complex genesis of European languages, to encourage the mobility of artists, to spread the perception of the theatre as a place open to discussion, to involve a heterogeneous audience, without barriers due to linguistic, ideological or religious factors.
